What is a boom lift? A boom lift is a mobile elevating work platform with a hydraulic arm that lifts a worker platform up and outward, giving access over and around obstacles that a purely vertical lift cannot clear. On UAE sites it is also called a cherry picker or a man lift.
Most people who call us about a boom lift are not machine people. They are signage contractors, facade cleaners, MEP supervisors and FM technicians with a job at height and a deadline.
They have heard three names used for what looks like the same machine, and they do not want to sound uninformed on the call.
So here is the honest version, including the part where a boom lift is the wrong answer. If your work is directly overhead on a flat floor, you are about to spend more than you need to.
Boom lift, man lift, cherry picker: are they the same thing?
In everyday use across Dubai sites, yes. All three names get used for the same family of machines.
The technical term is a boom-type MEWP, meaning a mobile elevating work platform where the platform is carried on an extending or jointed arm. “Cherry picker” comes from orchard work. “Man lift” is the phrase you will hear most often from UAE site crews and storekeepers.

The types of boom lift you will be offered in Dubai
Four types cover almost every enquiry we take.
Articulating (knuckle) boom lift
A jointed arm with two or three sections and a knuckle in the middle. It goes up, then reaches over and back down again.
This is your machine when something sits between you and the work: a canopy, a parapet, a pipe rack, a landscaped bed, a row of parked cars. It is the workhorse of fit-out, MEP and warehouse jobs.
Telescopic (stick) boom lift
A straight arm that extends like an aerial. Maximum height, maximum horizontal outreach, minimum manoeuvring once you are up there.
Use it on open plots, steel erection and long clear runs of facade where you can park the machine back and simply reach.
Truck-mounted boom lift
Mounted on a chassis, drives to site under its own power, sets down on outriggers, works, then drives away. In and out in a fraction of the time, with no trailer to schedule.
It is the default for street-side work, streetlight and camera maintenance, signage and telecom. One flag: deployment on public roads in Dubai typically needs RTA coordination and a traffic management arrangement, so build that into your programme rather than discovering it on the day.
Spider lift
Track-driven, narrow, light, and set on outriggers with spreader plates. It goes where a conventional boom physically cannot: podium decks, atriums, courtyards, internal marble floors, tight villa side returns.
If your access point is a doorway or your floor is finished, look at spider lift rental before anything else.

Do you actually need a boom lift? A four-question test
Answer these four honestly and the machine chooses itself.
1. Do you need to reach outward, or only upward? If the work is directly above a spot where the machine can stand, on a flat firm floor, you want a scissor lift. It is cheaper, has a bigger platform, and carries more weight. Check scissor lift rental first and only move up to a boom if the answer is no.
2. Is there an obstacle between the machine and the work? Yes means articulating boom, because you need the up-and-over. No means telescopic, because you just need reach.
3. What is the ground? Compacted plot, hardcore or sand means a diesel rough-terrain boom. Finished slab, tiles, marble or a podium deck means an electric boom or a spider lift with proper load spreading.
Be blunt with yourself here. Putting a diesel rough-terrain boom on a finished or suspended slab without engineered load spreading is how contractors end up paying for structural repairs, and no hire saving covers that bill.
4. What is your access? Gate width, turning circle, ramp gradient, overhead clearance. Measure the narrowest point on the whole route, not the widest point on the site.
That last one is where we lose the most time. In a typical week our Ras Al Khor yard has at least one job turned back at the gate, and it is almost never the machine’s fault.
Measure these three things before you call any hire desk:
- Maximum working height you need to reach
- Maximum horizontal distance from the nearest solid standing position to the work face
- Narrowest access point on the delivery route, in metres

Working height versus platform height: the number that costs people money
Platform height is where your feet are. Working height is conventionally platform height plus roughly 2 m, allowing for a person standing and reaching.
That 2 m gap is the most expensive misunderstanding in this business.
Here is a real pattern we see. A contractor measures a Jumeirah villa parapet at 12 m and orders a 12 m machine. The machine is a 12 m platform height unit, so once the operator is on the platform he can reach about 14 m, which is fine. Or it is a 12 m working height unit, so his feet reach 10 m and he cannot touch the parapet at all.
Same number on the enquiry, two completely different outcomes. Always state the height you need to reach, and let the hire desk convert it.
Who is allowed to operate a boom lift in Dubai?
Not whoever is free that morning.
Boom-type MEWPs sit under IPAF category 3b (mobile boom). Truck-mounted and spider units sit under 1b (static boom). The PAL Card issued after IPAF training is the evidence an operator carries.
The trap is category. If your operator holds 3a, that is mobile vertical, meaning scissor lifts. It does not cover a boom lift.
Main contractors, malls and facility managers across Dubai check PAL Cards at induction as a matter of routine. An uncertified operator does not mean a warning. It means a machine standing idle on your site while the hire clock runs.
There is a safety reason behind the categories, not just paperwork. In a boom-type platform you wear a full-body harness with a short restraint lanyard clipped to the designated anchor point inside the basket. A boom can catapult if the arm strikes something or a wheel drops, and the harness is there to keep the operator in the platform. Guardrails alone are not the control in a boom.
You have two clean options. Send your team on IPAF training and build the capability in house, or take the machine on wet hire with a certified operator and skip the problem entirely.
Boom lift safety and compliance on Dubai sites
Five things decide whether your hire runs smoothly.
Third-party certificate. MEWPs on Dubai sites fall under lifting equipment examination and certification. Dubai Municipality guideline DM-HSD-GU48 sets out certification by an EIAC-accredited third-party body on a 12-month cycle. Request the certificate by email before delivery, not on arrival. This is the position as of 2026, so verify the current requirement.
Daily pre-use inspection. The operator checks the machine before first use each shift and records it. Once the machine is on your site, that duty is yours, not the supplier’s.
Wind. Every machine carries a maximum permissible wind speed on its data plate. It is commonly around 12.5 m/s, but it is machine-specific and you should read the plate rather than trust a number from a blog.
This matters more in Dubai than people expect. A spring shamal or a dust event will take you over the working limit at 30 m while the ground crew still feels a light breeze. Treat it as a stop-work condition, and build a float day into any facade hire between February and May.
Midday break. Outdoor boom work stops between 12:30 and 15:00 daily from 15 June to 15 September under MOHRE’s Occupational Heat Stress Prevention Policy, Ministerial Resolution No. 44/2022. You still pay for the calendar day, so plan the duration accordingly.
Ground and outriggers. On a truck-mounted or spider unit, the outriggers concentrate the whole machine weight into four small points. On podium decks, basement roofs and paved areas, spreader mats are not an optional extra.
Typical boom lift jobs in Dubai
If your work looks like one of these, a boom is probably right:
- Facade cleaning and glazing replacement on Business Bay and Dubai Marina towers
- Signage, hoarding and banner installation along Sheikh Zayed Road frontages
- Warehouse roof, sprinkler and HVAC work in Jebel Ali and DIP
- Mall atrium lighting, ceiling and feature installation
- Streetlight, CCTV and telecom maintenance on public roads
- Steel erection and cladding on open plots in Dubai South
- Palm and tree maintenance in Jumeirah and Dubai Hills
- Film, event and exhibition rigging
Notice how many of those involve reaching over something. That is the pattern. FAQs
What is the difference between a boom lift and a scissor lift? A boom lift raises the platform up and outward on an arm, so it can reach over and around obstacles. A scissor lift raises a larger platform straight up only, with no horizontal reach. If the work is directly overhead on flat firm ground, a scissor lift is cheaper and carries more.
What height boom lifts are available in Dubai? Working heights across the market run from compact indoor units up to high-reach telescopic and truck-mounted machines. Rather than asking for a height, tell the hire desk the height you need to reach and the horizontal distance from where the machine can stand, and let them match the machine.
Do I need IPAF certification to operate a boom lift in Dubai? An IPAF PAL Card in category 3b is the standard proof of competence that main contractors and facility managers in Dubai ask for at induction. It is a client and site requirement rather than something we would describe as UAE law, but in practice you will be asked for it.
Do you need a harness in a boom lift? Yes, this is standard practice. A full-body harness with a short restraint lanyard clipped to the platform anchor point is used in boom-type MEWPs because of catapult risk. The harness keeps the operator inside the platform.
Can a boom lift be used indoors? Yes, with the right machine. Electric articulating booms and spider lifts are used indoors regularly for atriums, warehouses and plant rooms. Two conditions apply: zero emissions indoors, and floor loading signed off by the structural engineer where you are on a suspended slab.
Can I hire a boom lift with an operator in Dubai? Yes. That is wet hire, and the rental company supplies a certified operator with the machine. It is the usual choice for one-off jobs, and for any site where your own team does not hold the right PAL Card category — check our IPAF training page if you would rather build the capability in house.
The short version
If you need to reach outward, you need a boom lift. If there is an obstacle in the way, make it an articulating boom. If the floor is finished or the access is a doorway, make it a spider lift. If you only need to go straight up on a flat floor, do not hire a boom at all.
