A glass panel in a hotel lobby. A chiller that has to sit on a fourth floor roof. A doorway ninety centimetres wide, and a truck crane that cannot get within thirty metres of either.
That is the situation people are in when they start searching for a spider crane, and usually they have already had a method statement rejected or a manual lift go badly.
We hand these machines over from our yard in Ras Al Khor to fit-out crews, glaziers and villa builders across Dubai most weeks of the year. This page explains what the machine is, how the load chart actually works, and when you honestly do not need one.
We would rather spend ten minutes on the phone getting the machine right than send the wrong one and charge you a return trip.
Quick Answer: What Is a Spider Crane?
A spider crane is a compact tracked crane with four independently adjustable outrigger legs. It folds narrow enough to pass through a standard doorway, drives itself into position on tracks, then spreads its legs to lift. Common models in the UAE lift roughly one to six tonnes at short radius, indoors or outdoors.
- Fits through doorways, with the smallest classes under 600 mm wide in transport mode
- Four legs set independently, so it stands level across a kerb, a step or a ramp
- Available in diesel, petrol, LPG and electric versions, so it can work indoors
- Radio remote control, so the operator stands where he can actually see the load
- Lifts more than its own weight when the legs are fully extended
One honest qualifier before you read further. This is a precision machine, not a heavy lifting machine. If your load is eight tonnes and you have open ground and street access, you want a mobile crane.
Why It Is Called a Spider Crane
The four legs are the whole idea
Four articulated outrigger legs fold in against the body for travel and splay out for the lift. Stood there with its legs out, the machine looks like a spider, and the name stuck.
Here is the part that matters and that most pages skip. Each leg is set independently. That means the machine can stand level across a kerb, a step, a planter edge or a ramp, and still lift straight.
A truck crane cannot do that. It needs a broadly level, broadly uniform setup area, which is exactly what a real Dubai site rarely offers.
It drives itself in on tracks
The undercarriage is tracked, so ground pressure in travel is lower than a wheeled machine of the same weight. It is self-propelled at walking pace by radio remote.
The practical consequence is bigger than it sounds. You do not need a forklift or a truck to position it once it comes off the trailer. It walks into the lobby, down the ramp, into the basement, and stops where you point it.
Some machines have variable-width tracks that narrow for access and widen for travel stability.
Where they come from, and why the specs look Japanese
Spider cranes originated in Japan in the 1970s, and the category is still dominated by Japanese manufacturers. The two names you will see on UAE sites are Maeda and UNIC.
Learning the model naming saves you a phone call. UNIC uses URW numbers: URW-095, URW-295, URW-376, URW-706. Maeda uses MC numbers: MC285, MC305.
Why that matters commercially: when a rental company quotes you “a three tonne spider crane”, ask for the model and the load chart. Three tonnes is a headline number at minimum radius, and it is not what you will get at your working radius.
How Much Can a Spider Crane Actually Lift?
Capacity without a radius is not a specification
That is the single most important line on this page. Every capacity figure has a radius attached to it. “2.9 tonnes” means 2.9 tonnes at the shortest reach, boom retracted, legs fully out.

SWL means safe working load, the maximum the machine is rated to lift in that configuration.

All figures above come from published manufacturer data. Always work from the load chart of the exact machine and configuration standing on your site.
Look at the far end of the chart, not the near end
Take the published URW-295 chart. With the boom at its shortest, the machine holds roughly 700 kg at about 3.8 m radius on full outriggers. With all five boom sections out at roughly 7.6 m radius, that falls to roughly 200 kg on full outriggers.
Same machine. Same day. Same legs.
So the practical rule is this. Find your real working radius first, measured horizontally from the crane’s slew centre to the middle of the load. Then read the chart at that radius. Then subtract your rigging.
Two things contractors routinely forget to subtract: the weight of the lifting accessory, meaning the vacuum lifter, jib, spreader beam or chains, and any allowance for wind or swing on the load.
Why the Outriggers Change Everything
Full, mid and minimum leg spread
Three practical states. Legs fully extended gives maximum capacity. Legs part extended reduces it. Legs at minimum spread, so the machine fits a narrow corridor, reduces it heavily.
It is not a two-position switch either. The UNIC URW-295 offers 52 selectable outrigger positions, so this is a continuum. The load chart has a column for maximum and a column for minimum, and your reality usually sits somewhere between them.
The physics is straightforward. The outrigger footprint is the machine’s stability base. Shrink the base and the tipping moment the machine can resist shrinks with it.
The most common reason a booked spider crane job stalls is not the machine. It is that the setup position on site turns out not to be the one the customer assumed when they booked.
Worked example: same crane, two setups

Read what that is telling you. At short reach, cramping the legs costs you roughly a quarter of your capacity. At full reach it costs you nearly sixty percent.
The tighter your site, the more your site is charging you in lost capacity.
The decision rule: if your load is already close to the chart figure at full leg spread, and your site will only allow minimum spread, you do not have a spider crane job at that model size. You need the next class up, or a different method entirely.
These figures come from a published UNIC URW-295 chart and illustrate how outrigger spread behaves. They are not a substitute for the chart on your machine.
From the yard. A fit-out contractor in Business Bay booked on headline capacity from a spec sheet, placing a feature staircase section on a podium level. On site, a raised planter wall on one side meant two of the four legs could not reach full spread, and at that configuration the load sat outside the chart. The lift was stopped with everybody watching. We talked through the outrigger positions on the phone, worked out that repositioning the crane 1.5 m closer shortened the radius enough to bring the lift back inside the chart, and sent the operator to re-set. Capacity is a function of your setup, not the brochure. Send the setup photo before the delivery, not after.
What the legs are standing on matters as much as how wide they are
Outrigger pads spread the point load. On soft ground, sand fill, interlock, waterproofing membrane or a suspended slab, you need proper mats or spreader plates under those pads.
The Dubai list is specific. Sand backfill on villa plots in JVC and Nad Al Sheba. Waterproofing on podium decks and roof gardens. Tiled and marble lobbies in Business Bay and Dubai Marina, where a bare pad will crack a slab or a tile and you will pay for it.

Can a Spider Crane Really Fit Through a Door?
Yes, in the small classes. The UNIC URW-095 is 600 mm wide in transport mode and is stated by suppliers to pass through a single standard doorway. GGR quotes the URW-094 at 595 mm wide and 1,000 kg. The Maeda MC285C-3 is 750 mm stowed.
Now the caveat nobody gives you. Width is only one of four dimensions that decide access:
- Clear door width at the narrowest point, including the door leaf if it does not come off
- Clear height under the frame, the ceiling grid, the ducting and the sprinkler heads
- Turning space on both sides of the door, because the machine is several metres long and cannot pivot in a corridor
- Route load path, meaning ramp gradients, thresholds, and lift car dimensions and capacity if it has to go up
Measure the narrowest point on the whole route, not the door. Customers measure doors and forget corridor turns, ceiling grids and threshold ramps, which is why we now ask for a video walk of the route as standard.
From the yard. A shopfitting contractor in Deira measured the entrance door for a heavy display unit installation and confirmed it was wide enough. Nobody measured the 90 degree turn in the service corridor beyond it. The machine cleared the door and then had nowhere to swing its length. We walked the route on a video call, found an alternative loading bay route, and the machine went in the back. Measure the turns, not just the door.

When a Small Contractor in Dubai Should Hire a Spider Crane
Glass and facade install
Typical loads: IGU panels, curtain wall units, frameless glass balustrades, shopfront glass, skylight units.
Spider cranes work with below-the-hook glass vacuum lifters, meaning a lifting attachment that hangs from the hook rather than being part of the crane. Across the manufacturer range, vacuum lifter capacities span roughly 70 kg to 7,500 kg depending on the unit, with cladding vacuum units up to around 1,000 kg. Manipulator heads add tilt and rotation, so a panel can be turned from flat to vertical in the air.
Here is the point competitors leave out. The vacuum lifter’s own weight comes off your net capacity. A 200 kg manipulator on a machine rated 700 kg at your radius leaves you 500 kg of glass, before rigging.
Watch the wind too. Dubai afternoon wind on a large panel is a real working limit, and shamal conditions stop glass work outright.
Common locations: shopfronts in Deira and Al Qusais, tower lobbies in Business Bay, villa glazing in Arabian Ranches, showroom fronts in Al Quoz. If your installers also need to reach the panel while the crane holds it, that is a boom lift rental in Dubai sitting alongside the crane, not instead of it.
From the yard. A glazing subcontractor in a Dubai Marina tower lobby had panel weights comfortably inside the chart. Nobody had accounted for the vacuum lifter and the rigging on top of that. At the working radius they needed, the combined weight was over the rated figure. We re-ran the numbers with the attachment included, moved the setup position to cut the radius, and the panels went in. The load is the panel plus everything between the panel and the hook.
Atrium, mall and fit-out work in live buildings
Typical loads: feature lighting rigs, sculptural signage, escalator components, kiosk steel, atrium glazing, heavy joinery.
The spider crane wins here for three reasons. It goes in through the service corridor after hours. It runs electrically with no exhaust in an occupied building. And it stows small enough to be parked out of the way between night shifts.
Mall fit-out in Dubai is largely a night-shift business, with defined work windows, hoarding rules, a mall management permit and sometimes Dubai Civil Defence involvement. Lock your machine’s delivery window to your approved work window, not the other way round. If the need is getting people to height rather than lifting a load, spider lift hire is the machine for that.
Now the biggest rejection cause on these jobs: floor loading on suspended slabs and over basement car parks. Get the permitted slab loading from the building’s structural consultant or facilities team, and pass them the machine weight and the outrigger point loads for approval. We will not publish a slab capacity figure here because it is building-specific and a wrong number would be worse than no number.
From the yard. An interior contractor installing a feature lighting rig in a mall atrium booked a daytime delivery. Mall management only permitted plant movement inside a defined night window and would not release the service lift during trading hours. A full shift went. We rescheduled delivery into the permitted window and sent an electric unit so the machine could run inside the atrium without exhaust. In a live building the permit window controls the schedule, not your hire start date.
Rooftop plant, chillers and MEP replacement
Typical loads: FAHUs, split condensers, pumps, water tanks, solar PV, antenna and telecom kit.
For low and mid-rise roofs, a spider crane can be craned or hoisted onto the roof and then walk itself to the plant location. That avoids a full mobile crane setup and a street closure, which on a Sheikh Zayed Road hotel is not a small saving.
The warnings are practical: roof access route, parapet reach, waterproofing protection under the tracks and pads, and whether the roof slab is rated for the machine plus the load.
Common locations: retrofit work in Deira and Al Qusais, hotel plant replacement on Sheikh Zayed Road, warehouse roof units in DIP and Al Quoz.
And the honest limit. If the machine cannot get onto the roof at all, the answer is mobile crane hire in Dubai from the street with an RTA road permit, and we will tell you that rather than sell you a machine that cannot get up there.
Basement, tight access and existing-building work
Typical loads: transformer and switchgear replacement, lift machinery, gym equipment, generator sets, machine tools into workshops.
The spider crane drives down the ramp. Headroom in a basement car park kills a truck crane and usually kills a forklift with a mast as well.
There is an attachment that solves low headroom specifically: searcher hooks, available in 300 kg and 500 kg ratings, which let the machine pick under a low ceiling where the boom head cannot get above the load.
Warnings: ventilation for combustion engines in basements, which is why you take the electric version, ramp gradient limits, and turning circles at ramp landings.
Common work: DEWA substation and switchgear replacement, older Deira and Bur Dubai buildings, JAFZA and DIP warehouse plant rooms.
From the yard. An MEP subcontractor in Al Quoz was replacing a rooftop air handling unit, and part of the work meant moving the machine through the warehouse interior. A combustion-engine unit inside an enclosed shed with limited ventilation was not acceptable to the site HSE, and rightly so. We swapped to an electric-capable unit and confirmed the available power supply on site before the second delivery. Indoor and enclosed means electric, and the power supply is part of the booking conversation.
Villa, landscaping and residential plots
Typical loads: garden boulders and feature stone, water features, hot tubs, pergola and gazebo steel, tree and palm transplanting, precast pool components, garden room modules.
The machine drives through the side gate and across the lawn on tracks without churning the ground the way a wheeled machine does, and it reaches over a boundary wall into a rear garden that has no other access.
Useful attachments here: stone screw grab rated to 500 kg, battery vacuum lifters for porous materials, and fly jibs rated 800 kg and 1,000 kg to extend reach over an obstacle.
Warnings: soft sand backfill on new plots, buried irrigation and services, and community rules in gated developments.
Common locations: JVC, Arabian Ranches, Al Barsha, Nad Al Sheba, and Jumeirah villa renovations.
From the yard. A landscaping contractor in JVC was placing feature boulders and a water feature in a rear garden. Fresh sand backfill around the plot, and the outrigger pads started to sink on the first set-down. The machine had to be re-levelled before anything moved. We brought spreader mats out as standard on the next job for that customer, and we now ask landscapers how old the backfill is before delivery. On a new plot the ground is the risk, not the crane. Mats are cheaper than a stopped lift.

The right question is not “is a spider crane good”. It is “what is the cheapest safe way to get this load to that position”.

Choose a spider crane if the load is under a few tonnes, the access is tight or indoors, and precision matters more than raw capacity.
Choose a mobile crane if the load is heavy, the machine can stand outside with road space, and you can get the permit.
Choose a boom lift, scissor lift or man lift if what needs to go up is a person and their tools, not a load.
Choose a forklift rental in Dubai if the floor is flat and firm and nothing stands between the load and where it needs to be.
Take the same 400 kg chiller and put it on three different sites. Rooftop with street access is a mobile crane. Rooftop with no street access is a spider crane. Ground level in a flat warehouse is a forklift. Same load, three right answers.
And the honest line about the fifth column: the most expensive lift is the one done by hand that drops a glass panel.
What about a glazing robot?
Glazing robots are self-propelled glass handling machines with capacities in the region of 300 to 800 kg and reach up to around 6 m. They suit internal fit-outs and ground-level or low-rise glazing, and typically run with one or two operators.
Below-the-hook vacuum lifters used with a crane cover a heavier band, roughly 500 kg to 1,800 kg and above, with reach limited only by the crane. That is why they dominate facade and multi-storey work.
The decision rule: internal partition glass, shopfront glass and low-level glazing point to a glazing robot. Anything that has to go up a facade, over a parapet or above about 6 m points to a spider crane with a vacuum lifter.
They are complements rather than rivals, and plenty of glazing contractors run both on the same project.
The Dubai and UAE Compliance Side Nobody Explains
Third party inspection and certification
Dubai Municipality’s Health and Safety Department technical guideline for the examination and certification of cranes, hoists, lifts and other lifting equipment (reference DM-HSD-GU48-ECLA2) sets out the requirements clearly:
- Examination and testing must be carried out by a third party accredited by the Emirates International Accreditation Centre (EIAC)
- Equipment must be tested and certified once every 12 months
- The safe working load must be displayed on the equipment
- The compliance certificate must be kept at the site
- The certificate must state the serial number, technical details, tests performed and the safe working load
- Equipment found unsafe must be reported immediately to the Health and Safety Department
Translated into what you actually do: ask your rental supplier for the valid third party inspection certificate for that specific serial number before the machine arrives, keep a copy in your site file, and check that the SWL plate on the machine matches what the certificate says.
Our machines are maintained and inspected to the required standards, and the certificate travels with the machine. Check it at the gate. We would rather you did.
Lift plans, appointed persons and who signs what
A lift plan is a written method for the lift, covering load weight, radius, machine configuration, ground conditions, exclusion zone, rigging and roles. Roles typically include a lift supervisor, a rigger and a signaller or banksman.
Be accurate about where that comes from. Formal appointed-person and lift-plan structures come from the BS 7121 family of British standards, and in the UAE they are commonly written into main contractor, Trakhees, free zone and oil and gas client HSE requirements rather than being a single universal municipal rule.
So the practical answer is this. Your main contractor or the building’s HSE team will tell you what level of lift plan they want, and for anything non-routine you should assume they will want one. Ask early, because a rejected method statement costs a shift.

Operators, wet hire and dry hire
Two options. Dry hire means you take the machine and your own certified operator runs it. Wet hire means we send a trained operator with it.
We will say plainly when dry hire is a bad idea: first-time spider crane users, glass handling, indoor lifts near finished surfaces, and anything where the load sits close to the chart limit.
Every handover includes a basic operational and safety briefing. A briefing is not the same thing as an operator certificate, and we will not pretend otherwise. Most main contractors and building managements will want to see the certificate.
Working hours, seasons and site realities in Dubai
Midday break rules in the UAE summer months restrict outdoor work through the middle of the day, which pushes outdoor lifts into early morning and late afternoon. Ramadan brings shortened site hours. Mall and hotel work is mostly night shift regardless of season.
The instruction that follows is simple. Book the machine around your permitted working window, not around delivery convenience, and tell us that window when you enquire so the delivery lands inside it.

- Load weight, actual not estimated, including any frame, crate or packing that will be in the air
- Load dimensions and shape, because a 300 kg panel and a 300 kg motor rig completely differently
- Working radius, measured horizontally from where the crane can stand to the centre of where the load lands
- Lift height and any obstacle it must clear: parapet, canopy, boundary wall, ceiling grid
- Access route photos, taken at the narrowest point, with a tape measure in the shot if possible
- Ground or floor at the setup position: sand, interlock, screed, tiled lobby, suspended slab, roof deck, plus any known loading limit
- Indoor or outdoor, so we send the right power pack. Indoor and occupied means electric
- Site working window, including night shift, mall permits and main contractor induction requirements
- Wet or dry hire, and whether the site requires the operator’s certification in advance
- Duration, so we quote daily, weekly or monthly properly rather than rolling a day rate
What you get back: the machine class that fits, whether it fits at all, and if it does not, what does.
Half the calls we take end with us telling the customer they need a smaller machine, a different machine, or no machine at all. That is the job.
On cost, we are not going to publish a rate here. Hire rates depend on machine class, duration, attachments, operator and site location, and a number that ignores all five would be useless to you. Ask your supplier for the certificate matching that machine’s serial number before delivery.
Do I need a certified operator? For anything beyond the simplest lift, yes, and most main contractors and building managements will require it. Wet hire is the simple route, since a trained operator comes with the machine. We give a safety briefing at every handover, but a briefing is not a certificate and we will not present it as one.
