What is a mobile crane? A mobile crane is a self-propelled crane mounted on a wheeled or tracked chassis. It travels to site, sets up on outriggers, and lifts loads using a telescopic or lattice boom. Unlike a tower crane, it is not fixed to the site and leaves when the lift is finished.
Almost every first crane enquiry we receive sounds like this: “I need a 50-tonne crane.”
We understand why. Somebody on site said the load is heavy, somebody else remembered a number, and that number became the specification.
Here is the problem. A crane’s rated capacity is its maximum at minimum radius, with full counterweight, on a fully supported base. That is the number in the machine’s name. It is not the number you will lift with.
Extend the boom out to a working radius of 20 m and that same “50-tonne” crane may be rated for a few tonnes. The further out you reach, the less you can lift. This is physics, not a sales tactic, and it is the single most common misunderstanding in lifting.
So put the tonnage aside. Three numbers decide your crane: the weight of the load, the radius, and the hook height you need. Get those three right and the rest of this article will make sense.
Mobile crane, tower crane or spider crane?
Three different answers to three different problems.

If you have one lift, or a handful of lifts over a few days, you want a mobile crane. If you are building a tower for eighteen months, repeated mobile crane hires will cost you more than a tower crane and slow you down. If the lift is inside a finished building, neither of the first two will get through the door — that job belongs to a spider lift or a compact spider crane instead.
Types of mobile crane you will be offered in Dubai
Truck-mounted crane (boom truck)
A telescopic boom on a road-legal truck chassis. Fast to site, fast to set up, moderate capacity.
The everyday machine for general contracting and MEP work: dropping a package onto a roof, lifting AC units, placing steel sections. If your load is moderate and your site has road access, start here.
All-terrain crane
The workhorse of Dubai lifting. It travels on public roads at reasonable speed and then drives around a construction site once it arrives, with multiple steering axles and all-wheel drive.
Available across a wide capacity range, which is why it turns up on everything from a substation transformer to a precast panel job.
Rough-terrain crane
Site-only. Compact, high ground clearance, excellent on unfinished plots and soft or uneven ground.
It cannot legally travel on the road, so it arrives on a lowbed. That matters for your programme: you are scheduling a trailer movement as well as a crane.
City or compact crane
A narrow chassis built for tight urban access. This is the machine for Business Bay service roads, older Deira and Bur Dubai streets, and any lift where the crane has to fit between a building line and live traffic.
Crawler crane
Tracked, highest capacities, best duty cycles, and capable of travelling with a suspended load in the right configuration.
The trade-off is transport and time. It arrives in sections on multiple trailers and takes significant time to assemble and dismantle. It belongs on major infrastructure and industrial projects, not on a one-day lift.
Spider crane
Tracked, compact, and light enough to work on finished floors with proper load spreading. It goes indoors, into atriums, basements and podium decks.
The standard choice for glass and glazing installation, plant room equipment and anywhere a conventional crane physically cannot reach.

“How many tonnes do I need?” Why that is the wrong first question
This is the section worth reading twice.
Rated capacity is not lifting capacity
The tonnage in a crane’s name is its rated capacity: the maximum it can lift at its minimum working radius, with full counterweight fitted, fully deployed on outriggers, in its strongest configuration.
You will almost never lift in that configuration. Your load is somewhere out there, not directly beside the crane.
The three numbers that decide your crane
- Weight of the load. The actual weight, confirmed, including rigging gear, and including any contents. A chiller with water in it is not the same as a dry chiller. A skip with material in it is not an empty skip. “About two tonnes” is not a weight.
- Radius. The horizontal distance from the crane’s centre of rotation to where the load will finally sit. Not the distance from the site gate. Not the distance from the truck. From the crane’s slew centre to the load’s final position.
- Hook height. Structure height, plus load height, plus rigging height, plus clearance. Beginners give us the building height and forget that a 3 m sling assembly above a 2 m tall unit needs 5 m of headroom above the parapet.
Send those three numbers and any competent crane desk in Dubai can tell you within minutes whether the lift is straightforward, marginal, or needs a bigger machine.
The load chart
Every crane carries a load chart. It is a grid: radius across the top, boom length down the side, and the safe lifting capacity in each cell for that configuration and counterweight.
The pattern is always the same. Capacity falls, sharply, as radius extends. To illustrate the shape (this is an illustrative example, not a real machine’s chart):

Do not use that table to plan anything. Use it to understand why “how many tonnes” is meaningless without a radius attached to it.
LMI and the overload cut-out
Modern cranes carry a load moment indicator. It knows the boom length, the radius and the load, and it compares that against the chart.
If the lift is outside the chart, the crane stops. It will not complete the movement. That is the system working correctly.
The lesson: solve the lift on paper before the crane is on hire and standing in your site with an operator, waiting.
Ground bearing pressure and outrigger mats
This is where lifts in Dubai actually go wrong.
When a crane sets up, its entire weight plus the load goes through four outrigger pads. The pressure under each pad frequently exceeds the pressure the crane’s own tyres put on the ground, sometimes by a large multiple.
On podium decks, basement roofs, backfilled ground, block paving and anything over a service trench, that is a serious question. It needs engineered load spreading with mats, and on a structure it needs a structural check.
We have turned up to lifts where the only place the crane could stand was over a recently backfilled drainage run. That is a conversation to have during planning, not with a loaded crane on site.

What the crane company provides, and what you must provide
Most first-time hirers assume that hiring a crane means everything is handled. It does not. There is a clear split, and knowing it prevents an expensive standing charge on the day.

The principle in one sentence: we are responsible for a safe, certified crane and a competent operator. You remain responsible for a safe, planned lift.
The appointed person is the role beginners most often skip. This is the competent individual who plans the lift, selects the method, checks the crane against the load chart, and controls the operation on the day. The crane operator is not your appointed person, and neither is the site foreman by default.

Permits and movement in Dubai
The crane still has to get to your site, and in Dubai that is often harder than the lift itself.
RTA. Mobile cranes and their counterweights are oversize loads. RTA operates a mobility permit for heavy construction vehicles and trip-based permits for oversize and special loads, with escort or pilot vehicles required in some cases. Heavy-vehicle movement is also subject to peak-hour restrictions, which is exactly why crane mobilisations into Business Bay, Dubai Marina, Deira and DIFC so often happen overnight.
Developer and authority NOC. Emaar, Nakheel, DIFC, TECOM and DDA areas, JAFZA and Trakhees-governed zones each run their own site access and works approval regimes. Confirm the approval before you commit to a lift date, not after.
DEWA overhead lines. Minimum clearances from overhead power lines are non-negotiable, and buried services at the proposed outrigger positions need checking too.
Road closures. Any lift over a live carriageway or footpath needs traffic management coordinated with RTA and, where applicable, Dubai Police.
Third-party certification. The crane and all lifting gear must be examined and certified by an EIAC-accredited body under Dubai Municipality guideline DM-HSD-GU48, on a 12-month cycle. Ask for certificates at quotation stage, not on the morning of the lift. That is the position as of 2026, so verify the current requirement.
Wind. Every lift has a maximum permissible wind speed for that configuration and load. Large-surface-area loads such as cladding panels, hoardings and glazing become wind-critical well below the crane’s general limit, because the load acts as a sail.
Heat. Outdoor lifting stops between 12:30 and 15:00 from 15 June to 15 September under MOHRE’s Occupational Heat Stress Prevention Policy, Ministerial Resolution No. 44/2022. Plan the lift window around it.
You probably do not need a mobile crane if…
Honestly, a good share of the crane enquiries we take should not be crane enquiries.
- The load is light and inside a finished building. You need a spider crane. A mobile crane cannot get through the door, and if it could, the floor would not take it.
- You are placing materials at height on a construction site. A telehandler or boom loader does this faster and cheaper. See boom loader rental.
- You need people at height, not loads. That is a MEWP. See boom lift rental, man lift rental, or a spider lift for tight access, at spider lift rental. For overhead work on a flat firm floor, a scissor lift is usually cheaper still.
- You are moving pallets across a flat surface. A forklift.
- You are moving or levelling earth rather than lifting a load. That is a mini excavator or backhoe loader job, or a bobcat for tight footprints.
- You are building high-rise over many months. A tower crane, not repeated mobile hires.
Telling you this costs us a booking now and again. It also means that when we do say you need a crane, you can take it seriously.

Do I need a lift plan for a mobile crane lift in the UAE? Yes, in practice. Main contractors, developers and facility managers require a lift plan and method statement before a crane operates on site, prepared or approved by a competent appointed person. Treat it as a requirement rather than paperwork.
What is an appointed person in crane operations? The competent person responsible for planning the lift, selecting the crane and method, checking the load against the load chart, assessing ground conditions, and controlling the operation. The crane operator is not your appointed person.
How long does it take to set up a mobile crane on site? Anything from under an hour for a truck-mounted crane on hardstanding, to a day or more for a large all-terrain crane requiring counterweight assembly, to several days for a crawler crane delivered in sections. Access, ground preparation and outrigger mats often take longer than the crane itself.
Can a mobile crane work inside a building? Generally no. For lifting inside a finished building, in an atrium, a basement or on a podium deck, the machine you want is a spider crane, subject to floor loading sign-off.

Do not start with tonnage. Start with weight, radius and hook height, and know who your appointed person is going to be.
